43 WHITE MEN is inspired by the work of Daumier's small satirical political sculptures, and the hand puppets Paul Klee made for his son. Without a clear idea of what the puppets would look like, I began sculpting the heads in plaster, allowing the material to inform me -- I realized that I was making the heads of white men -- 43 white men to be exact. As I painted each one, I imagined them each sitting for a portrait, or in Hollywood parlance, “a headshot.” I have also filmed each puppet, as if they were auditioning for a role in a film project.
