Looking through the New York Times magazine, and doing my cursory glance through that week’s issue before tossing it out, I decided to really look at the issue — in this case “The California Issue,” dated June 4, 2023. I then started tearing the issue apart, creating collaged images as I went along. Piecing together this work resulted in a closer reading of the content, which focused on the environmental and social issues confronting my home state of California. I used every bit of the issue — images, ads, text, crossword puzzles — to create these works.
