“Words Are All We Have”
I have always been drawn to the writing and plays of Samuel Beckett, probably for his stark use of imagery, humor, poetry, and the enigmatic situations his characters find themselves in. I began compiling sentences, and fragments of his text in a list. I then decided to have these phrases made into street signage, which led to me placing the signs into actual environments. The everyday normalcy of signs along our streets and highways is something we take for granted. But with this new signage inserted into those environments, something other occurs — an aberration, an intervention, that allows the viewer a “double-take” -- a reconsideration of meaning. In a way, the text taken OUT of CONtext opens up possibilities and a shift of preconceived notions of our world.
